Volunteers and staff from the Montrose Settlements Restoration Program journeyed to Santa Barbara Island for a mass planting of native shrubs. After a long day of intense labor over 1,000 native plants were placed in the ground that will provide suitable nesting habitat for Xantus's Murrelets and Cassin's Auklets. These are two seabirds that originally nested in large numbers on Santa Barbara Island until the non-native ice plant took over parts of the island reducing the amount of suitable nesting habitat. This short film shows the challenges of working in a unique environment and the intrigue of this tiny island off of California's coast.

While the film's adult stars Martin Mull, Karen Black, Anne De Salvo, and Murphy Dunne received top billing in promotional materials, the story is told through the perspective of the adolescent protagonists; played by Georg Olden, Pamela Segall, Michael Hentz, Joey Coleman, and Christopher Brown. Ted uses the absence of Augusta and Lionel to join Laken at home and to exchange with her their Christmas presents ahead of time. Mason accepts a call from Dominic which, coming in as an anonymous source, informs him that he could be likely to find some compromising indications in the residence Lockridge. Mason disembarks to their place some minutes afterwards with a mandate of house search. In spite of the protest...
This webinar originally aired on 18 November 2015. Small-scale coastal fisheries are central to the health of the ocean, livelihood, poverty alleviation and food security for millions around the world, but today many of them are severely threatened by chronic overfishing. TURF-Reserves are an approach to managing many small-scale fisheries around the world. However, many fishing communities lack access to the resources needed to implement them. EDF staff has worked with Master’s students from the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at UC Santa Barbara to create TURFtools, a user-friendly tool for small-scale fishing communities to facilitate TURF-Reserve design. TURFtools incorporates both local fishing knowledge and the best available scientific data to provide communities ...

Pour on the rum on the wound
And send kisses through a postcard
The winter has come
Straight to the bones
Wile you're still rubbing your eyes
Let the wax dry on the pulps
Prayers are becoming courses
Salt-away heart/cuttlebone knife
...nobody loves as i love you tonight!
Far away from here
Where the sky is getting clear
The blueberries float
In the outdoor washtubs
And my hampered fingers
As a compass without a needle
It will never end
Looking for your hands
Over the foam of the waves
The tail of the whale
Over and over
